When does SCHD pay dividends?

Quarterly. SCHD goes ex-dividend in late March, June and September and in mid-December, and pays a few days later. You need to own shares before the ex-dividend date to get that quarter’s payment. Amounts vary from quarter to quarter, so the calculator works from the total of the last four.

SCHD dividend history

SCHD has raised its yearly dividend every year since its first full year in 2012, from $0.27 a share to $1.047 in 2025. That’s 10.6% a year over the last decade and 9.1% over the last five years. Growth is uneven: 19.8% in 2019 but 3.8% in 2023 and 5.2% in 2025.

Amounts are adjusted for the 3-for-1 split in October 2024. The calculator assumes 7% a year by default, below the long-run average, because a fund this large rarely keeps growing at its old pace. The results show 4%, your rate and the 10-year average side by side.

How much SCHD do I need for $1,000 a month?

About 11,375 shares, or roughly $370,000 at today’s price and yield, before tax. Building it over time takes less, because dividends grow and reinvested ones buy more shares. Investing $1,000 a month for 20 years, with dividends growing 7% a year, would pay about $22,000 a year after tax by the end.

“If I invest $1,000 a month in SCHD for 20 years and reinvest, what income would I have?”

About $22,188 a year after 15% tax, assuming 7% dividend growth and 5% price growth. Try this scenario

“I own 500 shares and add $500 a month. What will I collect in 20 years?”

About $14,101 a year after tax at 7% dividend growth. At 4% it’s about $7,300; at the past decade’s 10.6%, about $32,800. Try this scenario

SCHD FAQ

Does SCHD pay dividends monthly?

No, quarterly. SCHD goes ex-dividend in late March, June and September and in mid-December, and pays a few days later. If you want income every month, you can pair it with funds that pay in other months, or simply set aside each quarterly payment and spend a third of it a month.

Are SCHD dividends qualified?

Mostly, because the fund holds U.S. companies. Qualified dividends are taxed at 0%, 15% or 20% depending on your income, instead of your ordinary rate, if you meet the holding period. Your 1099-DIV shows the qualified share each year. In an IRA or 401(k), dividends aren’t taxed as they’re paid.

What happened to SCHD’s dividend after the 2024 split?

SCHD split 3-for-1 in October 2024, so each share was replaced by three worth a third as much. The dividend per share dropped to a third too, but your total income didn’t change. All figures on this page are adjusted for the split so years compare fairly.

What does SCHD cost to own?

Its expense ratio is 0.06% a year, or $6 on every $10,000 invested, taken out of the fund’s returns rather than billed to you. That’s among the lowest for dividend ETFs. Most brokers charge no commission to buy or sell it, and you can usually buy fractional shares.

SCHD tracks the Dow Jones U.S. Dividend 100 Index. To compare it with other dividend funds, use the dividend calculator, which has VYM, VIG, DGRO and others built in. The simulation method is on the methodology page. Nothing here is a recommendation to buy SCHD.
